Acquired in 1951, Floyd Test Site was used for the development of various radar and satellite communications systems by the RADC. Its claim to fame is that it was the site where the very first intercontinental satellite transmission was received, in 1960. The signal originated at the RADC site in Trinidad and was bounced off of the giant aluminum orb of the Echo I Satellite. In 1977, the test site was declared "excess," and was no longer used or maintained by RADC.
