Site Information: Camden Test Annex
This 475 acre site was created to test and develop the NAVARHO communications system, which provided aircraft with navigation information regarding bearing and distance from the station. The system employed three 625 foot antennas located at almost exactly the same elevation, and the signal from these three towers was identifiable over 12-20 million square miles of the earth's surface. NAVARHO was developed for global long-range communication for the Air Force, and cost roughly $600,000 to install. Project engineer Irving Gordy said, "It's put Camden on the map." The Camden Test Annex was purchased in 1954 and was deactivated in 1974.
